Captain Torry Mack was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. In 1987, he graduated from West End High School and later joined the United States Army. While serving on active duty, he was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division. He became a Jump Master and obtained the rank of Sergeant. After ending his active-duty career, he joined the United States Army Reserves (USAR) and earned the rank of Master Sergeant. After serving 21 years in the military, he retired and began his career in law enforcement.
In 1995, he joined the Birmingham Police Department and has proudly served the citizens of Birmingham, Alabama for 28 ½ years. After graduating from the Police Academy, he was assigned to the South Precinct. He eventually became a member of the South Task Force and performed undercover details. In 1999, he transferred to the Tactical Operations Precinct and served on the Warrant Detail, Entry Team, and as a Motor Scout.
In 2011, Mack was assigned to the Police Academy as a Training Instructor. As a Training Instructor, Mack taught course materials and facilitated the recruits’ transition to the Patrol Bureau. During the same year, Mack was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and served as the Training Coordinator. Mack worked closely with the Alabama Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC) in Montgomery, Alabama, regarding the state’s hiring processes and standards and other outside agencies regarding training courses.
In 2018, Mack was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and served as the Academy Director. His duties included ensuring effective operations and regulatory compliance as required by local, state, and federal laws; hiring, training, and evaluating personnel; providing leadership and direction to subordinate personnel; developing, implementing, and coordinating in-service and external training programs; conducting needs and instructional program analysis; and serving as a liaison between the Birmingham Police Department, other city departments, and outside governmental agencies.
In July 2020, Mack was promoted to the rank of Captain and served as the Commanding Officer of the Tactical Operations Precinct. In May 2023, Mack became the Commanding Officer of the Vice/Narcotics Division.
Mack holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice Administration with Magna Cum Laude from Columbia Southern University. He has received numerous awards and accolades, including the FBI-LEEDA Trilogy Award.
He is a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE).
Captain Mack enjoys spending time with his family, riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, and traveling. He considers himself a transformational leader and relentlessly encourages his team to reach their full potential.
