Lieutenant Donald Gary started his police career in the United States Air Force in 1976 as a Law Enforcement Specialist he was honorably discharged from the air force in 1980 after (4) four years of service.
From 1980 – 1982 he attended Greenville technical College in Greenville, South Carolina and studied criminal Justice. He joined the Greenville, South Carolina Police Department in 1982 where he worked as a Patrol Officer, Master Patrol Officer and Narcotics Detective, after (7) seven years of service he moved to Birmingham, Al.
Lieutenant Gary Joined the Jefferson County Sheriffs Department in 1989 and he was assigned to the Birmingham Division as a Deputy Sheriff, after (4) four years of service with the Sheriffs department he transferred to the Birmingham Police department.
After joining the Birmingham Police Department in 1993, he was assigned to the South Precinct as a Patrol Officer and Patrol Training Officer. In 1997 He was assigned to the Homicide Division as a Homicide Detective. In 1999 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and he was assigned to the West Precinct as a patrol supervisor. In 2001 he was assigned to the Internal Affairs Division were he served as an Investigator until 2013.
In 2013 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and assigned to the Homicide Division as the Homicide commander, in 2015 he was assigned to the Records Division as the Records Commander in charge of Records the property Room and Report Review. In 2016 Lieutenant Gary was transferred to the Patrol Division and assigned to the North Precinct as the Day Shift Commander. He is presently assigned as the Moring shift Commander at the West Precinct.
Lieutenant Gary has more than 40 years of law enforcement experience.
