Lieutenant Sonya Stewart

Lieutenant Sonya Stewart is a native of Birmingham and graduated from Ramsay Alternative High School on Birmingham’s Southside. She holds a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Criminal Justice, from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Lieutenant Stewart began her law enforcement career with the Alabama Department of Corrections in January of 1990. After two years as a correctional officer, she left to become a police officer.

Lieutenant Stewart graduated from the Birmingham Police Academy in February of 1992, and has served this community for 27 years. Her first assignment out of the Academy was at North Precinct (Fort Apache), where she patrolled for fourteen years as a beat and Distress Neighborhood officer. In 2006, she was promoted to sergeant and assigned to the West Precinct as a Patrol Supervisor, and later to the Task Force. In 2008, she was transferred to the Investigative Bureau where she worked cases, and supervised detectives in the Auto Theft Division. In 2009, she was promoted to Lieutenant, and has worked several assignments: Shift Commander at East Precinct, supervisor in the Special Victims Unit, Director of Training at the Birmingham Police Academy, and currently the Commander of the East Day Shift and Airport Substation.

Lieutenant Stewart is also a reservists in the Air Force National Guard. She has been a member of the 117th Air Refueling Wing here in Birmingham, since 1987. She currently holds the rank of Major, and is the Commander of the 117th Maintenance Operations Flight. She is a member of the following Organizations; Police Benevolent Association, National Guard Association of the United States, National Guard Association of Alabama, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, INC
