Lieutenant Teresa Colston

Lieutenant T.W. Colston was born in Birmingham, Alabama.  Colston attended Holy Family High School and has an Associate Degree in Communications from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, Alabama.  She plans on continuing her education at UAB towards a bachelor’s degree in Communication Science.

Lieutenant Colston has 22 years in Law Enforcement; starting with training at the Birmingham Police Academy in December 8, 1997.  Lieutenant Colston graduated the academy with a perfect score on the Law Exam and received an award at the graduation for this accomplishment.

Lieutenant Colston started her career at North Precinct in the patrol division. She worked as the accident investigator for the Evening Shift and utility when necessary. Her goal was to work as an accident investigator for the Tactical Unit; but fate lead her to the Records Division of the police department in 1999. Lieutenant Colston remained in the Records Unit until she was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in January 2005.

After her promotion to sergeant, Lieutenant Colston was assigned to the patrol division at East, South and North Precincts until August 2013; when she was re-assigned to the Records Division. There she reorganized the unit and in January 2016 created the project that merged Data Entry with Records. Lieutenant Colston also revived Reports Review and helped in the department’s transition to Electronic Mobile Reporting.

Lieutenant Colston is an instructor at the police academy and teaches Report Writing, Mobile Reporting and Law Enforcement Records Management Systems. Lieutenant Colston was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on July 19, 2019. She is currently assigned to West Precinct as the Day Shift Commander.

In her spare time Lieutenant Colston is an avid reader who agonizes over Outlander and the Game of Thrones ending.
