Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives are conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Wednesday, May 12, 2021.

The victim has been identified as James Williams, (17), b/m, of Pleasant Grove, Alabama.

At approximately 10:00 p.m., officers from the West Precinct responded to a call of a person shot at 2737 Jefferson Ave. Officers arrived and found a male victim lying on the ground suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the torso. Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and transported the victim to UAB Hospital where he succumb to his injuries.

The preliminary investigation indicates the victim was at the location to visit a friend. While waiting in the courtyard a suspect fired shots from a vehicle. There are no suspect(s) in custody.

This is Birmingham’s 37th murder investigation of 2021 and 3 justifiable death investigations. The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations into the total homicide investigations counts.
