Homicide Investigation Update

The Birmingham Police Department reports an arrest has been made in connection to the homicide of Robert Prowell Jr.

The suspect has been identified as
Otto Alexander Smith, (24), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

Detectives presented the information gathered on the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office for review. After the assessment of the information, BPD Detectives obtained a Capital Murder warrant for Otto Alexander Smith. Smith was arrested and transported to the Jefferson County Jail where he is being held with no bond.

Robert Prowell Jr. was discovered in the roadway near Lomb Ave & McMillon Ave on Thursday June 4, 2020 around 2:30am. Through the course of the investigation, detectives have learned that these two individuals may have information pertaining to the death of Robert Prowell Jr. Detectives need your help in locating and identifying the individuals in the photo.

Media Release. 115

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives are conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Thursday, June 5, 2020.

The victim’s has been identified as
Robert Lee Prowell Jr., (22), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., Officers from the West Precinct responded to the 800 block of 6TH Street West on a call of a person shot. Officers arrived and discovered the victim lying in the street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to UAB hospital where he later succumb to his injuries.

There is limited information in this investigation. There are no suspect(s) in custody. This is an ongoing investigation.
