Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives are conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 a 20th Place and Avenue P in the Ensley Community.

The victim has been identified as Desmon Antwuan McGuire, (17), b/m, of Birmingham, Alabama.

Just before 7:00 p.m., West Precinct Officers responded to the location after being dispatched on a ShotSpotter call of approximately seven rounds fired in the area. Officers arrived to discover a male lying in a grassy area surrounded by community members attempting to render aid. Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to the location and the victim was pronounced deceased on the scene.

The preliminary investigation indicates the victim was involved in a verbal dispute with the suspect prior to being shot. At the time of the shooting there were several community members in the area that possibly witnessed the incident. A person of interest was detained for further questioning in this investigation, however there was no arrest made. Investigators are enlisting the assistance of the public.

The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States.
