Death Investigation: 15-Year-Old Gunshot Victim
The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a death investigation after a 15-year-old was shot and killed in East Birmingham. The incident occurred on Sunday, July 7, 2024.
The victim will be identified after his next of kin is notified.
At around 7 a.m., South Precinct officers were dispatched to UAB Hospital on report of a juvenile gunshot victim.
Officers arrived at UAB Hospital when they observed a 15-year-old young male inside a van suffering from a gunshot wound.
UAB Hospital staff pronounced the victim deceased.
South Precinct officers learned of a possible incident location, the 9200 Block of Parkway East. East Precinct officers canvassed the area of the 9200 Block of Parkway East when they discovered a firearm in some bushes and blood on the ground near the Walmart and Wells Fargo.
South precinct officers detained four males who arrived at UAB Hospital in the van the victim was discovered in. The ages of all parties involved are 14, 15 (victim), 15, 17, and 18.
Officers transported the males to BPD Headquarters; BPD Homicide detectives interviewed the males.
The preliminary investigation has revealed we believe the males were riding around in the van in the 9200 Block of Parkway East and the 14-year-old had possession of a handgun. Due to unknown circumstances, the 14-year-old fired the gun striking and killing the 15-year-old.
The evidence collected and observed lead us to believe this is a case of a juvenile mishandling a firearm NOT an intentional murder.
Officers transported the 14-year-old to the Jefferson County Youth Detention Center where he is being held.
Homicide detectives will continue to investigate this incident.
