Media Release 192- Homicide Ruling- 2nd Street North

Homicide Ruling

On Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at around 7:00 a.m., North Precinct officers were dispatched to 920 2nd Street North on report of a Person Down.

Officers arrived on the scene and observed the victim unresponsive.

The victim has been identified as:

Erving Gray, (49), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived and pronounced the victim deceased.

The victim was shot on Tuesday, September 15, 1992.The Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office reports the victim suffered a severe seizure because of his gunshot injury. The Medical Examiner ruled Mr. Gray’s death a Homicide.

A suspect was arrested in 1992 and charged with Attempted Murder in this case. The suspect passed away in 1997.

This is Birmingham’s 94th murder investigation of 2024 with 8 justifiable death rulings.

The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations in the total homicide investigations counts.
