Officer Involved Shooting

The Birmingham Police Department reports an officer-involved-shooting incident occurred on Saturday, September 24, 2022.

On Saturday, September 24, 2022, two West Precinct officers were dispatched to a domestic disturbance in the 2400 Block of 30th Street Ensley. The call details stated a father wanted his 23-year-old son removed from his apartment because the two have been having several disagreements. The father stated the son was armed with a firearm.

The two officers entered the apartment and began speaking with the son. Officers attempted to assist the son and deescalate the situation. During the conversation, the son entered a back bedroom and reemerged brandishing a firearm. The son pointed a firearm at one of the responding officers. One officer discharged his firearm at the son striking him.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel was immediately summoned to the location and transported the son to UAB Hospital; he has life-threatening-injuries. A firearm was recovered at the scene near the son. The father and both officers were uninjured.

BPD Command Staff requested the State Bureau Investigation (SBI) respond to the location. SBI will be the lead investigating agency in this incident.

Both officers activated their body-worn-cameras throughout the entire incident. Both officers were taken out of service and will remain out of service until the investigation by SBI is concluded and presented to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.
