Homicide Investigation
The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 1, 2025.
Victim information:
Derek Burpo, (51), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.
Just before 9 p.m., East Precinct officers received a call of Shots Fired in the 400 Block of Roebuck Drive. Officers received a second call that a person was shot in the area.
Officers arrived on the scene when they observed an adult male lying unresponsive on a private roadway suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived and pronounced the victim deceased.
The preliminary investigation revealed the victim was a pizza delivery driver. We believe he was making a delivery when he was shot.
There is no one in custody.
Officers and detectives will continue to canvass the neighborhood. We will use our technological resources to assist us in tracking down the suspect(s).
