Arrest Made in the Lafontae Dejarris Lenard Homicide Investigation
The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have obtained arrest warrants in connection to the murder of Lafontae Dejarris Lenard. Two other victims were shot during this incident and have suffered life-threatening injuries. The incident occurred on Monday, September 2, 2024, in the 200 Block of 3rd Avenue SW.
The suspect has been identified as:
Tyler Reed Sanders, (21), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.
Tyler Reed Sanders was also wounded by gunfire during this shooting incident.
Through the course of this investigation, detectives discovered that Sanders was the suspect in this case.
On Thursday, September 5, 2024, Birmingham Police Detectives presented case information to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. After an assessment of the information, detectives obtained arrest warrants for the suspect.
The following arrest warrants were obtained on Tyler Reed Sanders:
- Murder (No Bond)
- Attempted Murder ($60,000 Bond)
- Attempted Murder ($60,000 Bond)
Tyler Reed Sanders is in the custody of the Birmingham Police Department at an area hospital as he continues to receive treatment for his injuries.
Sanders will be transported to the Jefferson County Jail upon discharge.

Homicide Investigation
The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Monday, September 2, 2024.
The victim will be identified upon notification to the next of kin.
At approximately 10:49 p.m. South Precinct officers responded to a Burglary in progress call in the 200 Block of 3rd Avenue SW, University Crossings Apartments. While in route, the call was updated to a Person Shot.
Officers arrived on the scene and observed an adult male victim, lying outside the apartment suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services arrived on the scene and transported the victim to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Officers then learned that there was a second adult male victim inside the apartment suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
The second victim was pronounced deceased by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services.
Officers also located a third adult male victim and a fourth adult female victim who exited the same apartment and were found a short distance away both suffering from gunshot wounds.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services transported both victims to UAB Hospital.
The preliminary investigation suggests the victims were inside of the apartment playing cards when the front door of the apartment was kicked in by an unknown suspect. The suspect began firing shots wounding the victims.
There is no one in custody.
