Medical Examiner’s Ruling in the Homicide/Unclassified Death Investigations of Roosevelt Walker and Larry Collins
On Wednesday, September 11, 2024, Jefferson County Medical Examiner Dr. Dye informed BPD Homicide detectives the Manner of Death in the Roosevelt Walker Homicide Investigation will be Homicide. Dr. Dye informed detectives the Manner of Death in the Larry Collins Unclassified Death Investigation would be Suicide.
BPD Homicide detectives will be classifying this case criminally as a Murder/Suicide.
BPD detectives presented case information to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. This case will be ex-cleared due to the death of the suspect.
Homicide/Unclassified Death Investigation
(Media Release 201)
The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide/ unclassified death investigation. The incident occurred on Thursday, September 5, 2024.
The victims have been identified as:
- Roosevelt Walker, (66), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.
- Larry Collins, (68), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.
Just before 11:00 a.m., North Precinct officers responded to a call of Two People Down at 1617 5th Avenue N., Freedom Manor Apartments.
When officers arrived on the scene, they observed two adult males inside an apartment lying unresponsive, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services arrived on the scene and pronounced both victims deceased.
The preliminary investigation suggests a friend of the victims who has a key to the residence entered and observed the victims unresponsive. The friend called 911 Emergency Services for help.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office arrived on the scene and took care and custody of the victims remains. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office will perform an autopsy and state the manner of death of the second victim.
Detectives are not currently looking for any other suspects.
