Media Release 233 – Arrest Made in Homicide Investigation

Arrest Made in Homicide Investigation of Stephen Scott, Jr

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have obtained a warrant for an arrest in the connection to the murder of Stephen Lawrence Scott, Jr. who was shot and killed on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, while in the 1700 block of Aspen Run.

The suspect has been identified as:

Lavell Onterria Burton, (19), B/M, of Birmingham, AL

Birmingham Police Detectives presented information on the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. After an assessment of the information, detectives obtained a warrant for Capital Murder, Attempt Murder, Robbery 1st Degree, and Discharging into an Occupied Vehicle.

Burton is in the custody of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office where he will be held without bond for the Capital Murder charge and bonds totaling $180,000 for the other charges.

Homicide Investigation

(Media Release 194)

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 20, 2022.

The victim has been identified as:

Stephen Lawrence Scott Jr., (19), B/M, of Irondale, Alabama.

At approximately 9:50 PM, South Precinct officers were dispatched to the 1700 Block of Aspen Run (Adonna Apartments) on report of a person shot. Officers arrived on the scene when they located the victim lying unresponsive inside of a vehicle suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Officers also located a second adult male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased. BFRS transported the second victim to UAB Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Details are limited in this investigation. Currently, there is no one in custody.
