Homicide Investigation Update
The Birmingham Police Department reports that detectives have received a ruling in connection with a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Sunday, September 1, 2019 at approximately 2:13 a.m.
The deceased has been identified as:
Rasheem Sledge, B/M, 42, of Birmingham, Alabama.
Officers from the West Precinct responded to 1575 Bessemer Road to investigate a report of a fight. While responding, officers received additional information that a person was shot. Upon arrival, officers observed an unresponsive person lying on the floor suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue transported the victim to UAB Hospital for treatment of his injury. Investigators later received information that the victim had succumbed to his injury and was pronounced deceased by hospital staff. A security guard also sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the arm during the incident.
The incident is a result of a domestic dispute between the deceased and his girlfriend/suspect.
A second security guard detained the suspect after the shooting.
BPD Homicide Investigators presented the information gathered on the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office for review. Following the assessment of the information, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office ruled the shooting as justifiable.
No warrants will be pursued in this investigation.
