Media Release 249- Homicide Investigation- Parkway East

Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Monday, November 12, 2024.

The victim has been identified as:

Enrique Cortes, (45), H/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.  

Just before 8 a.m., East Precinct officers were dispatched to 220 Gadsden Highway on report of a Person Shot call.

Officers arrived on the scene when they observed a pickup truck in the roadway in the 9300 Block of Parkway East. Officers observed the victim in the driver’s seat; he had been shot.

Officers learned the victim’s five-year-old grandson was in the vehicle during the shooting. A community member rushed the grandson to safety at a nearby CVS.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived and pronounced the victim deceased.

The preliminary investigation suggests the victim was travelling southbound on Parkway East when a separate vehicle pulled next to his and an unknown suspect(s) fired shots into the victim’s vehicle.

There is no one in custody.

The Birmingham Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center is assisting officers and detectives in this investigation.

The victim’s grandson was reunited with family members.

The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations in the total homicide investigations counts.
