Arrest Made in the Melvin Burkes Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have obtained warrants for an arrest in connection to the murder of Melvin Burkes. A second victim was also shot during this incident and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, in the 1700 Block of Pearson Avenue Southwest.

The suspect has been identified as:

Andrew Blake Carter, (37), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

Birmingham Police Detectives presented case information to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. After an assessment of the information, detectives obtained warrants for Murder (No Bond), and Attempted Murder ($60,000 Bond).

The suspect is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail after turning himself in to police custody.

Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 30, 2024.

The victim has been identified as:

Melvin Burkes, (38), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

Just after 6 p.m., West Precinct officers were dispatched to a Person Shot call in the 1700 Block of Pearson Avenue Southwest.

Officers arrived on the scene and then observed an adult male gunshot victim suffering from non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers discovered the victim, Melvin Burkes, on the sidewalk suffering from life-threatening injuries. Community members and patrol officers performed life-saving aid on Burkes.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel arrived and transported both victims to UAB Hospital.

Melvin Burkes succumbed to his injuries at UAB Hospital.

The preliminary investigation suggests the victims were involved in an argument with a third adult male. The suspect shot the victims and then fled the scene.

West Precinct officers took a person of interest into custody near the incident location.

After the investigation developed, the person of interest was not believed to be the shooting suspect.
