Arrest Made in the Enrique Cortes Martinez Homicide Investigation
The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have obtained an arrest warrant in connection to the murder of Enrique Cortes Martinez.
Enrique Cortes Martinez was shot and killed inside his vehicle on Monday, November 11, 2024, while travelling in the 9300 Block of Parkway East. Enrique’s five-year-old grandson was inside his vehicle at the time of the shooting; his grandson was not injured.
The suspect has been identified as:
Anson Evans, (29), B/M, of Center Point, Alabama.
On Thursday, November 14, 2024, the Birmingham Police Department’s Crime Reduction Team took Anson Evans into custody at an apartment in Center Point, Alabama. He was transported to BPD Headquarters then later booked into the Birmingham City Jail.
Birmingham Police Homicide detectives presented case information to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. After an assessment of the information, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Capital Murder (Victim inside a Vehicle) on Anson Evans.
Anson Evans will be in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail and held with No Bond.
The motive in this shooting appears to be road rage.
During this investigation, community members provided tips to detectives that assisted them in identifying Evans as a suspect.
Within hours of these tips, BPD officers took Anson Evans into custody.
Anson Evans wouldn’t have been arrested on Thursday had it not been for community members providing tips to our detectives.

Homicide Investigation
(Media Release 249)
The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Monday, November 11, 2024.
The victim has been identified as:
Enrique Cortes Martinez, (45), H/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.
Just before 8 a.m., East Precinct officers were dispatched to 220 Gadsden Highway on report of a Person Shot call.
Officers arrived on the scene when they observed a pickup truck in the roadway in the 9300 Block of Parkway East. Officers observed the victim in the driver’s seat; he had been shot.
Officers learned the victim’s five-year-old grandson was in the vehicle during the shooting. A community member rushed the grandson to safety at a nearby CVS.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived and pronounced the victim deceased.
The preliminary investigation suggests the victim was travelling southbound on Parkway East when a separate vehicle pulled next to his and an unknown suspect(s) fired shots into the victim’s vehicle.
There is no one in custody.
The Birmingham Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center is assisting officers and detectives in this investigation.
The victim’s grandson was reunited with family members.
