Media Release 262-Homicide Investigation-25th Street Southwest

Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Thursday, November 21, 2024.

The victim has been identified as:

DeCarlos Perez Smith Jr, (22), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 6:45 p.m., West Precinct officers were responding to a Shot Spotter notification of approximately 20 rounds of gunfire in the 300 Block of 25th Street Southwest.

When officers arrived on the scene, they observed an adult male victim lying in the roadway, unresponsive and suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue services arrive on the scene and transported the victim to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

On Friday, November 22, 2024, at 7:22 p.m., the succumbed to his injuries at UAB Hospital. Homicide Investigators were notified by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

Details are limited in this investigation.

There is no one in custody.

This is Birmingham’s 133rd murder investigation of 2024 with 11 justifiable death investigations.
