Media Release 269- Auto Theft Awareness
Auto Theft Awareness
The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) reported that over 1 million vehicles were stolen in 2023. To help you avoid becoming a victim of auto theft, here are some essential safety reminders:
1. Never leave your vehicle running while unattended, and avoid leaving automatic start keys inside your vehicle.
2. Always lock all doors and remove valuables from your vehicle, especially firearms.
3. Install an audible alarm system for added security.
4. Consider adding an anti-theft device like a steering wheel lock.
**Note:** Thieves are still targeting Kias and Hyundais due to security vulnerabilities. Owners of these vehicles are encouraged to install an anti-theft device immediately.
5. Invest in a vehicle tracking device. A cost-effective option is to hide an Apple Air Tag or similar device in your vehicle.
Keep in mind that suspects often use stolen vehicles to commit further crimes, such as robbery, violent assaults, or even murder. Protecting your vehicle from theft not only safeguards your property but also helps ensure your safety and that of your community.
