DUI Driver Injures BPD Patrol Officers
On Thursday, December 5, 2024, just after 5 p.m., the Birmingham 911 Communications Division received a call about a traffic accident in the 6500 Block of 1st Avenue North involving two vehicles and a Birmingham Police Department patrol vehicle.
The suspect has been identified as:
Roger Smith, (56), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.
An East Precinct wreck investigator arrived on the scene and then learned Roger Smith was driving a 2020 KIA Amanti when his vehicle crashed into two Birmingham East Precinct patrol officers, who were stopped at a traffic light in the 6500 Block of 1st Avenue North.
The crash caused the officer’s patrol vehicle to collide with a third vehicle.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and transported both officers to UAB Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Our wreck investigator took Roger Smith into custody under the suspicion he was driving while under the influence (alcohol).
On Friday, December 6, 2024, our investigator presented case information to the City of Birmingham’s Magistrate Office. After the assessment, Roger Smith was charged with Driving Under the Influence (alcohol).
Both officers are recovering from their injuries.
