Media Release 275- Homicide Investigation- Cotton Avenue Southwest

Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Saturday, December 14, 2024.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as:

Randolph Taylor Jr., (48), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At around 12:25 p.m., West Precinct officers responded to a Shot Spotter call in the 600 Block of Cotton Avenue Southwest. 911 dispatchers updated officers that there was a gunshot victim at the West End Walking Trail, 633 Cotton Avenue Southwest.

Officers arrived on the scene when they observed the victim lying unresponsive on the ground, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived and pronounced the victim deceased.

The preliminary investigation suggests the victim got into a physical altercation with an adult male suspect. The suspect shot the victim and then fled on foot.

BPD K-9 officers responded to the area to assist patrol officers.

The Birmingham Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center is assisting officers and detectives in this investigation.

There is no one in custody.
