9-Year-Old Boy Shot at Huffman Apartment Complex
The Birmingham Police Department is investigating a shooting that injured a 9-year-old boy and damaged numerous apartments and vehicles. The incident occurred on Tuesday, December 17, 2024.
At around 1:25 a.m., East Precinct officers were dispatched to multiple calls of Shots Fired at the Springville Landing apartment complex in the 1000 Block of Huffman Road.
Officers arrived at the apartment complex when the victim’s mother stated to officers her son had been shot.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived and transported the child to Children’s Hospital. The victim suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot injury that didn’t require surgery.
The preliminary investigation revealed the occupants of an apartment near the victim were involved in a verbal argument with a separate group that was in the parking lot. The two groups then exchanged shots.
Officers and investigators believe both groups know one another and the shooting stemmed from a feud.
BPD Crime Scene technicians recovered at least 200 mixed shell casings from the scene.
Nine occupied apartments were shot into. Twenty-four unoccupied vehicles were shot into.
The victim’s apartment was caught in the crossfire of the shootout; no one in the victim’s apartment was targeted.
No other parties reported being injured by gunfire.
BPD officers have detained five persons of interest in this investigation. BPD Felony Assault detectives are interviewing them at BPD Headquarters.
