Arrest Made in the Randolph Taylor Jr. Homicide Investigation
The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have obtained a warrant for an arrest in connection to the murder of Randolph Taylor Jr. He was shot and killed in the afternoon of Saturday, December 14, 2024, at 633 Cotton Avenue Southwest.
Suspect information:
Jhontaye Cobb, (24), B/M, of Fairfield, Alabama.
Birmingham Police Department’s patrol officers, Real Time Crime Center, and numerous community members helped BPD Homicide detectives quickly identify a suspect. Community members assisted investigators on the scene and by calling in tips.
On Sunday, December 15, 2024, BPD’s Crime Reduction Team and Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Jhontaye Cobb at a residence in Fairfield, Alabama.
Birmingham Police Homicide detectives presented case information to the Jefferson County Magistrate’s Office. The Jefferson County Magistrate’s Office issued a Capital Murder (Robbery) arrest warrant for Jhontaye Cobb. He is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail, and he has No Bond.

Homicide Investigation
(Media Release 275)
The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Saturday, December 14, 2024.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as:
Randolph Taylor Jr., (48), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.
At around 12:25 p.m., West Precinct officers responded to a Shot Spotter call in the 600 Block of Cotton Avenue Southwest. 911 dispatchers updated officers that there was a gunshot victim at the West End Walking Trail, 633 Cotton Avenue Southwest.
Officers arrived on the scene when they observed the victim lying unresponsive on the ground, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived and pronounced the victim deceased.
The preliminary investigation suggests the victim got into a physical altercation with an adult male suspect. The suspect shot the victim and then fled on foot.
BPD K-9 officers responded to the area to assist patrol officers.
The Birmingham Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center is assisting officers and detectives in this investigation.
There is no one in custody.
