Arrest Made in Major Turner Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have obtained a warrant for an arrest in connection to the murder of Major Turner. Major Turner was tragically killed on February 4, 2021, in the Kimbrough Homes Housing Community.

The suspect has been identified as:

Clearence Jr Speed, (24), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

During the investigation into Major Turner’s murder, Birmingham Police Homicide detectives identified Clearance Jr Speed as a suspect.

Birmingham Police Detectives presented information on the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. After an assessment of the information, detectives obtained a warrant for Felony Murder ($1,500,000 bond).

Clearance Jr Speed is currently in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail with no bond on a separate case where Mr. Speed was charged with Capital Murder (Media Release 20).

  Homicide Investigation

      (Media Release 31- 2021)

The Birmingham Police Department reports investigators are conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Thursday, February 4, 2021 at 2904 John Bryant Road in the Kimbrough Homes Housing Community.

The victim has been identified as:

Major Turner, (2), b/m, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 9:37 p.m., officers from West Precinct responded to the location on a call of a child shot. Officer arrived and discovered the victim, Major Turner lying on the living room floor suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the upper extremities. Birmingham Fire and responded to the scene and transported the child to Children’s Hospital of Alabama with life threatening injuries. Officers later discovered the mother of the child was wounded. She was transported to UAB Hospital for treatment and released. The Birmingham Police Department’s 911 Communications Division later received notification the victim succumb to his injuries.

The preliminary investigation indicates the suspect(s) fired several rounds into the apartment from outside and fled the scene. There are currently no suspects in custody nor has a motive been established.

This is Birmingham’s 11th murder investigation of 2020.

FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations into the total homicide investigations counts.
