Media Release 282- Statement from the Birmingham Police Department

Statement from the Birmingham Police Department

As a result of BPD’s new focus on our intelligence-led approach and continued collaboration with law enforcement partners, we’ve received information from an agency in neighboring Georgia regarding potential street racing and exhibition driving events in the Atlanta Metro area that may continue into Birmingham. We are relaunching Operation Knight Rider for New Year’s Eve.

Through strong partnerships, BPD has enhanced our NYE safety plan by allocating additional resources to address illegal celebratory gunfire and exhibition driving while continuing our regular crime-fighting duties. Our dedicated team of officers, troopers, and deputies, supported by their commanders, is fully prepared to respond swiftly to any possible incidents.

We are grateful to ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor, Jefferson County Sheriff Mark Pettway, and each state Trooper and sheriff Deputy assisting us. Their support, along with our regional law enforcement partnerships, significantly enhances our effectiveness.

While our priority is ensuring a safe and enjoyable New Year’s Eve celebration for all Birmingham residents, we strongly urge potential participants of any crime to think twice—starting the new year without a car, insurance, or your freedom is not worth it. This will be a zero-tolerance operation.

On behalf of the Birmingham Police Department, we wish everyone a safe, joyful, and Happy New Year. Let’s welcome 2025 safely and responsibly together.

-Interim Chief Michael Pickett
