Homicide/Assault Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Friday, December 24, 2021.

The victim has been identified as:

Shaun Rhudy, (42), W/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 3:20 a.m., South Precinct officers were dispatched to 1813 10th Court South (Marty’s PM) on report of a shots fired call. Officers arrived on the scene where they observed the victim lying unresponsive at the entrance of the business suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Officers located an additional male in a parking lot across the street from the business lying unresponsive suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and transported both males to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The victim succumbed to his injuries at UAB Hospital. The second male remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Arrest Made in Homicide/Assault Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have obtained warrants for arrest in connection to the murder of Shaun Rhudy and assault of a second male victim at Marty’s PM on Friday, December 24, 2021.

The suspects have been identified as:

  1. Alonzo Johnson II, (21), B/M, of Greensboro, Alabama.
  2. Terrill Huey Jr., (27), B/M, of Moundville, Alabama.

The preliminary investigation suggests that management at the business did not allow the suspect (Alonzo Johnson II) into the establishment due to a past incident. Alonzo Johnson II was then involved in an altercation in the parking across the street when shots were fired. Shaun Rhudy, along with the second male victim, was struck by gunfire; Shaun Rhudy was fatally wounded. Alonzo Johnson II then fled the scene after a vehicle picked him up from the location.

Concerned community members provided information for the suspects’ vehicle and a “Be On the Look Out (BOLO)” was broadcast for the suspects’ vehicle.  Afterward, West Precinct officers were dispatched to Interstate 59 South just past the Arkadelphia Road Exit on report of a vehicle on fire. Officers observed the vehicle on fire was the BOLO vehicle; officers took both suspects into custody at the scene of the vehicle fire.

The suspects were transported to Birmingham Police Headquarters for questioning.

Birmingham Police Detectives presented information on the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. After an assessment of the information, detectives obtained the following warrants:

Alonzo Johnson II- Murder ($150,000 Bond), Assault 1st Degree ($30,000 Bond)

Terrill Huey Jr- Hindering Prosecution X’s 2 ($30,000 Bond Total)

Both suspects are in the custody of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

This arrest would have not been effected as quickly as it was if it wasn’t for the help of so many concerned community members.
