Arrest Made in Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have obtained a warrant for an arrest in connection to the murder of Raymond Cotton Jr. Raymond Cotton Jr. was shot and killed on Christmas Day at a residence on 40th Street West.

The suspect has been identified as:

Micah Spratt, (40), B/M, of Dallas, Texas

Birmingham Police detectives presented information on the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. After an assessment of the information, detectives obtained a warrant for Murder.

On December 31, 2021, Micah Spratt was taken into custody in Dallas, Texas by Dallas Police Department patrol officers.  He is currently in the custody of the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office awaiting extradition to the Jefferson County Jail where he will be held with a $250,000 bond.

Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Saturday, December 25, 2021.

The victim has been identified as:

Raymond Cotton Jr., (42), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

 Shortly after 11:00 a.m., North Precinct officers were dispatched to 25 40th Street West on report of a person shot. Officers arrived on the scene and observed the victim lying unresponsive on the front porch of the location suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and transported the victim to UAB Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The preliminary investigation suggests the victim was walking to the front porch when he was approached on foot by an unknown suspect(s). The unknown suspect(s) fired shots at the victim fatally wounding him; the suspect(s) then fled the scene.

Currently, there is no one in custody.
