Homicide Investigation
The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation after a victim injured in New Years Day shooting passed away. The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 1, 2025.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as:
Nathaniel Young, (23), B/M, of Gardendale, Alabama.

NOTE: The preliminary investigation revealed detectives have not ruled out that the suspect who fired shots at our K-9 officer was the suspect in the double shooting.

BPD K-9 Officer Fired Upon by Possible Shooting Suspect

K-9 Officer Fired Upon
The Birmingham Police Department reports a BPD K-9 officer providing additional patrol for New Year’s Eve (Operation Crackdown) was fired upon by a possible shooting suspect.
At around 2:20 a.m., a BPD K-9 officer and our officer’s K-9 partner, were patrolling near Center Street @ Graymont Avenue West. Our officer heard gunfire and believed a suspect in a nearby car fired shots from the vehicle. Our officer didn’t think the suspect’s first shots were fired at the police.
Our officer got behind the suspect’s vehicle near the 100 Block of Graymont West. The suspect fired multiple shots at our officer. Our officer fired shots at the suspect.
The suspect fled the area; officers didn’t locate the suspect.
Our K-9 officer and our K-9 officer’s partner were not injured in the shooting. The gunfire damaged the pair’s patrol vehicle.
Officers Locate Shooting Victims
Birmingham 911 dispatchers issued a Max Emergency call over the police radio.
Responding officers were flagged down in the 500 Block of Center Street on a report of two people shot. Officers then observed two adult males who were inside a vehicle suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived and transported both victims to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Birmingham Police Department’s Homicide Unit and Internal Affairs Division responded to the scene.
