Homicide Investigation Update
The Birmingham Police Department reports that detectives are conducting a homicide investigation. The deceased was discovered on Tuesday March 10, 2020 at approximately 11:07 p.m.
The victim has been identified as Marcus Wilson (22), B/M of Birmingham, Alabama.
Officers from the East Precinct responded to 216 71st Street North on a call of shots fired in the area. Officers arrived and discovered the victim in the rear of 130 71st Street North suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and the victim was transported to UAB Hospital. Detectives were later notified that the victim succumb to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by hospital staff.
The preliminary investigation suggest the victim was walking an unknown person in a dark colored sedan appeared. An exchange of words occurred before the suspect opened fire striking the victim. There are no suspect(s) in custody. This is an ongoing investigation. Additional details will be provided as they come available.

This is Birmingham’s 17th homicide investigation of 2020 and 4 justifiable death investigations. The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations into the total homicide investigations counts.
Birmingham Police Department made an arrest in connection to the homicide of Marcus Wilson.
The suspect has been identified as:
Alexander West, (19), B/M, of Cottondale, AL.
BPD Homicide Investigators presented the information gathered on the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office for review. Following the assessment, a Murder warrant was obtained against the suspect. The suspect was arrested and is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail.
