2nd Arrest Made in the Devarta Thomas Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have obtained a warrant for a 2nd arrest in connection to the murder of Devarta Thomas. Devarta Thomas was found shot and killed on Monday, March 20, 2023, in the 300 Block of 74th Street North.

The suspect has been identified as:

Tony Howard Jones II, (32), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

 On Friday, April 7, 2023, Birmingham Police Detectives presented information on the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. After an assessment of the information, detectives obtained a warrant for Capital Murder.

On Thursday, April 13, 2023, the Birmingham Police Department’s Crime Reduction Team took Tony Howard II into custody.

Tony Howard II is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail with No Bond.

NOTE:  BPD Homicide detectives arrested Jamarian Carpenter on Friday, March 24, 2023; he is charged with Capital Murder in connection to the Devarta Thomas Homicide Investigation.

 Homicide Investigation

(Media Release 51)

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Monday, March 20, 2023.

The victim has been identified as:

Devarta Dedre Thomas, (30), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At around 12:30 AM, East Precinct officers were dispatched to the 300 Block of 74th Street North on report of a person down in the roadway.

Officers arrived on the scene and observed an adult male lying unresponsive suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced the male deceased.

Details are limited in this investigation.

There is no one in custody
