Homicide Investigation
The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Sunday, January 5, 2025.
The victim has been identified as:
James Leon Craig, (40), B/M of Birmingham, Alabama.
At approximately 2:31 a.m., South Precinct officers responded to a call of a Person Shot in the 10 Block of 17th Court South.
When officers arrived on the scene, they observed a male and a female victim suffering from an apparent gunshot.
Birmingham Fire Rescue arrived on the scene and transported the male victim to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The female victim was also transported to UAB Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
At around 8:40 p.m., the male victim was pronounced deceased by UAB medical staff.
The preliminary investigation suggests that a verbal altercation occurred inside the victim’s residence between several individuals that led to gunshots being fired wounding both victims. Everyone remained on the scene and was detained and questioned by our Homicide detectives.
This investigation appears to be domestic in nature.
The suspect is in custody.

This is Birmingham’s 3rd murder investigation of 2025 with 0 justifiable death investigations.
The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations in the total homicide investigations counts.
