Homicide Investigation: Justifiable Death Ruling

The Birmingham Police Department conducted a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Friday, June 7, 2024.

The victim has been identified as:

Willie Dorsey Jr., (55), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At around 3:30 p.m., West Precinct officers were dispatched to a Person Shot call at the Five Points West Food Mart (2258 Bessemer Road).

Officers arrived on the scene when they observed the victim lying unresponsive near a gas pump suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived and pronounced the victim deceased.

The preliminary investigation suggests an adult male shot the victim and then fled the scene. Patrol officers with the help of the Birmingham Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center tracked the adult male to a nearby location.

Patrol officers took the male into custody free of any incident. Officers transported the male to BPD Headquarters where BPD Homicide detectives interviewed him.

BPD Homicide detectives presented case information to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. After a review of the information, the homicide has been ruled Justifiable Death #6.

The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations in the total homicide investigations counts.

**The information is based on a preliminary and ongoing investigation, which continues to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records, and analyze forensic evidence. The Department’s understanding of the facts and circumstances may change as additional evidence is collected and analyzed**
