 Arrest Made in the Jaylan Lee Jenkins Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have obtained a warrant for an arrest in connection to the murder of Jaylan Lee Jenkins, who was shot and killed on April 9, 2024, in the 4200 Block of Jackson Street.

The suspect has been identified as:

17-Year-Old Male Juvenile (name withheld to protect Juvenile Rights)

On Wednesday, April 10, 2024, the suspect arrived at the BPD Headquarters and turned himself into police custody.

On Thursday, April 11, 2024, Birmingham Police Detectives presented case information to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office for review. After assessment of the information, detectives obtained a warrant for Capital Murder on the suspect.

The juvenile suspect is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail and has No Bond.

Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.

At approximately 8:28 p.m., East Precinct officers were dispatched to a Person Shot call in the 4200 Block of Jackson Street, the Inglenook Community.

The victim is a 16-year-old male.

When officers arrived on the scene, they observed the juvenile male victim unresponsive inside a vehicle, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.

The preliminary investigation suggests that a verbal altercation occurred between the victim and an unknown suspect at a neighborhood convenience store. While attempting to leave the location, shots were fired into the victim’s vehicle, wounding the victim. The victim’s vehicle came to a stop in the front yard of a residence blocks away from the convenience store.

There is no one in custody.

This is Birmingham’s 33rd murder investigation of 2024 with 4 justifiable death investigations.
