Media Release 81- Operation Knight Rider

Operation Knight Rider

Under the leadership of Mayor Randall Woodfin and Chief Scott Thurmond, the Birmingham Police Department has been committed to formulating a plan that is proactive in addressing the issues of exhibition driving and street racing (exhibition driving) in Birmingham.

Operation Knight Rider is the Birmingham Police Department’s strategic plan at combatting exhibition driving in the City of Birmingham.

Creation and Goal of Operation Knight Rider

Deputy Chief Michael Pickett of the Special Operations Bureau took on the project of creating Operation Knight Rider after observing an increase in exhibition driving in April.

BPD is data driven; BPD leadership looks at data on exhibition driving incidents in Birmingham and uses the data to deploy officers and resources to areas that see a high volume of exhibition driving. BPD’s goal is enforcement; arresting criminal offenders, and impounding their vehicles.

The Birmingham Police Department would not be able to carry out this operation if it wasn’t for the partnership and assistance of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
