Justifiable Death Ruling

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have received a ruling in connection to the homicide investigation of Derrick Keith. The incident occurred on Sunday, March 10, 2024, in the 2300 Block of 7th Way Northwest.

Investigators presented the information gathered to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office for review. Following the assessment, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office ruled the actions justifiable. This investigation is reclassified as Justified Death Investigation #5.

The Birmingham Police Department has 42 murders thus far in 2024.

The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations into the total homicide investigations counts.

Homicide Investigation

(Media Release 45)

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Sunday, March 10, 2024.

The victim has been identified as:

Derrick Keith, (30), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama. 

At approximately 8:57 a.m., East Precinct officers were dispatched to a Person Shot call in the 2300 Block of 7th Way NW, Madison Park Apartments.

When officers arrived on the scene, they observed the victim lying on the sidewalk unresponsive, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services arrived on the scene and transported the victim to UAB Hospital.

The victim was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival by medical personnel.

The preliminary investigation suggests that the victim and suspect were involved in a confrontation inside an apartment. The victim was struck by gunfire before exiting the apartment and collapsing on the sidewalk.

There is a person of interest detained.
