Media Release 181- Homicide Investigation- 50th Street North

Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Sunday, August 20, 2023.

The victim has been identified as:

Dedrick Hampton, (44), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 11:40 p.m., East Precinct officers along with South Precinct officers were dispatched to a Person Shot call in the 800 Block of 50th Street North.

Officers arrived on the scene and when they observed the victim and a second adult male lying in a yard suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue (BFR) personnel arrived on the scene and then pronounced the victim deceased. BFR personnel transported the second victim to UAB Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers learned a third adult male showed up at the BP gas station, 5117 Richard Arrington Junior Boulevard North, suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers arrived at the BP Gas Station when they observed the victim suffering from an gunshot wound.

BFR personnel arrived at the BP gas station and then transported the third victim to UAB Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The preliminary investigation suggests the two adult males, who were found in the yard, were hanging out in the 800 Block of 50th Street North when an unknown suspect(s) fired shots at them. Currently, we believe the third gunshot victim was a motorist traveling on 50th Street North who was caught in the crossfire.
