Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives are conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred at 440 4th Street North on October 1, 2020.

The victim has been identified as Dana Boyd II, (31), b/m, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 5:05 p.m., officers responded to 440 4th Street North on reports of a person shot. Officers found the victim, Dana Boyd II lying on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded and Boyd was pronounced deceased on the scene.

The preliminary investigation suggest the victim was outside the apartment with friends when two suspects approached and shot Boyd. The suspects fled the scene prior to officer’s arrival. There are no suspect(s) in custody. Detectives have not established a motive.

This is Birmingham’s 78th homicide investigation of 2020 and 14 justifiable death investigations and 1 non-criminal homicide (accidental shooting). The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations into the total homicide investigations counts.

The Department’s understanding of the facts and circumstances may change as additional evidence is collected and analyzed**
