Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 25, 2023.

The victim has been identified as:

Roman Gonzales, (48), H/M, of Bessemer, Alabama.

At around 7:10 PM, West Precinct officers were dispatched to the 1400 Block of 27th Street Ensley on report of a person shot. Officers arrived on the scene when they observed an adult male lying unresponsive outside on a set of stairs.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.

The preliminary investigation suggests the victim was part of a crew of workers who were at a residence remodeling a residence. Unknown suspects forcefully entered the residence; we believe the victim was shot during a robbery. No other workers were injured.

Currently, there is no one in custody.

Note: In October 2022, the Birmingham Police Department was made aware of a group of individuals who were robbing members of our Hispanic community at gunpoint. Detectives are working to determine those responsible for this incident and if there may be any connections to previous incidents.

FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations in the total homicide investigations counts.
