Three Injured After Patrol Vehicle Struck

The Birmingham Police Department reports two community members, and a BPD officer are currently receiving treatment after a Chevrolet Camaro caused a side-impact (T-bone) collision with a BPD patrol vehicle. The incident occurred on Sunday, July 2, 2023.

At around 4:46 AM, the Birmingham 911 Communications Division received a call of a patrol vehicle struck at 5th Avenue and 30th Street South.

Officers arrived on the scene and observed the Chevrolet Camaro on fire. The occupants were able to exit the burning vehicle before officers’ arrival. The BPD Ford Explorer was in close proximity, with the BPD officer still inside. The officer was immediately removed from the vehicle by officers that arrived on scene.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue (BFRS) arrived on the scene and extinguished the fire without incident. BFRS then transported the two occupants of the Chevrolet Camaro (male/driver and female) to UAB Hospital. BFRS also transported the BPD officer (female) to UAB Hospital for treatment.

The community member (male/driver) and the BPD officer suffered serious injuries but are both in stable condition. The female community member suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The preliminary investigation suggest that the BPD South Precinct officer had just entered the intersection at 5th Avenue and 30th Street South when the driver (male) of the Chevrolet Camaro disregarded a stop sign, causing the side-impact (T-bone) collision to the driver side of the BPD patrol unit, according to a citizen witnesses.

This vehicle accident is still under further investigation.

BPD wishes a speedy recovery to everyone impacted by this vehicle accident.
