Media Release 156- Homicide Investigation- Fire Station #9

Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Wednesday, July 12, 2023.

The victim has been identified as:

Jordan Ellis Melton, (29), B/M, of Helena, Alabama.  

At 8:30 AM, North Precinct officers were dispatched to a report of Two Firefighters Shot at Fire Station # 9.

Officers arrived on the scene when they learned two firefighters had been shot inside Fire Station # 9.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue (BFR) personnel transported the two injured firefighters to a local area hospital. They both suffered serious injuries.

One of the firefighters, Jordan Melton, succumbed to his injuries on Monday, July 17, 2023.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that an unknown suspect(s) shot the two firefighters while they were inside Fire Station # 9. The shooting appears to have taken place near the bay doors.

There is no one in custody.

The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations in the total homicide investigations counts.

Two On-Duty Birmingham Firefighters Shot

The Birmingham Police Department reports two on-duty Birmingham firefighters were shot at Fire Station # 9 (1228 27th Street North). The incident occurred on Wednesday, July 12, 2023.

At 8:30 AM, North Precinct officers were dispatched to a report of Two Firefighters Shot at Fire Station # 9.

Officers arrived on the scene when they learned two firefighters had been shot inside Fire Station # 9.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue (BFR) personnel transported the two injured firefighters to a local area hospital. They both have suffered serious injuries.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that an unknown suspect(s) shot the two firefighters while the two firefighters were inside Fire Station # 9. The shooting appears to have taken place near the bay doors.

There is no one in custody.

BPD has deployed numerous resources to bring the person(s) responsible into custody.
