Media Release 256- Homicide Investigation- 5th Avenue

Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Sunday, December 3, 2023.

The victim has been identified as:
Nigel Riddick Roberson, (19), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

On Saturday, December 2, 2023, at approximately 3:38 p.m., North Precinct officers responded to multiple ShotSpotter notifications in the 900 Block of 5th Avenue North.

Officers arrived on the scene and observed two adult males inside of a vehicle, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene and transported both victims to UAB Hospital.

On Sunday, December 3, 2023, the Jefferson County Coroner’s office notified the Birmingham 911 Communications Division that victim Nigel Roberson succumbed to his injuries at approximately 3:58 p.m.

The preliminary investigation suggests, the victims were stopped at a red light on 5th Avenue N., when unknown suspects exited a vehicle and began firing shots at their vehicle and left the scene. The victims were targeted.

There is no one in custody.
