Justifiable Death Ruling

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have received a ruling in connection to the homicide investigation of Rufus Brock. The incident occurred on Friday, June 21, 2024, in the 4400 Block of 5th Avenue South.

Investigators presented the information gathered to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office for review. Following the assessment, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office ruled the actions justifiable. This investigation is reclassified as  Justified Death Investigation #8.

The Birmingham Police Department has 66 murders thus far in 2024.

The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations into the total homicide investigations counts.

Homicide Investigation

(Media Release 146)

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Friday, June 21, 2024.

The victim has been identified as:

Rufus Brock, (34), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At around 11:05 a.m., South Precinct officers were dispatched to Multiple People Shot at the Oak Tree Apartments located in the 4400 Block of 5th Avenue South.

Officers arrived on the scene when they entered the parking lot and observed the victim and two other adult males suffering from a gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue (BFR) personnel arrived and pronounced the victim deceased. BFR personnel transported the other victims to UAB Hospital. One of the males suffered life-threatening injuries.

The preliminary investigation suggests the deceased male and the victim in life-threatening injuries were wearing masks when officers made contact with them.

Currently, it appears the two masked men robbed the third victim. During the robbery, a shootout ensued.
