Reclassification-Justifiable Ruling

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have received a ruling in connection to the homicide investigation of Stephone Lamar Jemison. The incident occurred on Friday, June 26, 2020.

Investigators presented the information gathered on the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office for review. Following the assessment of the information, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office ruled the actions justifiable. This investigation is reclassified as a Justified Death Investigation.

The Birmingham Police Department has 72 homicides thus far in 2020, 12 justifiable death investigations, and 1 non-criminal homicide. The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations into the total homicide investigations counts.

Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives are conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Friday, June 26, 2020.

The victim has been identified as Stephone Lamar Jemison, (26), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 10:42 p.m., officers from West Precinct responded to 2915 Ave Z on reports of a person shot. Officers arrived and discovered the victim Stephone Jemison unconscious in the front room of the apartment suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to UAB Hospital where he succumb to his injuries.

The preliminary investigation suggest a verbal argument took place prior to the Jemison being shot. One person of interest was detained and questioned in connection to this homicide. Updates will be provided as additional leads develop.
