Homicide Investigation Update

The Birmingham Police Department reports the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim of a homicide that occurred on Thursday, December 17, 2020.

The victim has been identified as Destiny Washington, (20), B/F, of Trussville Alabama.

The preliminary investigation suggests the victim was shot while sitting inside of a vehicle. Detectives are actively working to discover a motive and identify a suspect(s) in this shooting. There are no suspects currently in custody. Updates will be provided as this case develops.

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Thursday, December 17, 2020.

The victim will be identified upon notification of next of kin.

At approximately 9:40 pm, South Precinct officers were dispatched to Children’s Hospital (1601 5th Avenue South) on report of an adult gunshot victim who arrived by way of private vehicle. Children’s Hospital staff pronounced the victim deceased.
The preliminary investigation suggests the victim was shot inside of a vehicle while in the parking lot of the Hill University Center (1400 University Boulevard). The victim was then driven to Children’s Hospital by way of private vehicle for emergency medical care. Detectives are working to discover a motive for the shooting.

This is Birmingham’s 102nd homicide investigation of 2020 with 15 justifiable death investigations and 1 non-criminal homicide (accidental shooting). The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations into the total homicide investigations counts.
**The information is based on a preliminary and ongoing investigation, which continues to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records, and analyze forensic evidence. The Department’s understanding of the facts and circumstances may change as additional evidence is collected and analyzed**
