Homicide Investigation
The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Tuesday, May 14, 2024.
The victim has been identified as:
Michael Phillip Coleman, (62), B/M of Birmingham, Alabama.
At approximately 2:50 p.m., East Precinct officers were responding to a ShotSpotter notification of approximately 6 gunshots fired, in the 100 Block of 59th Street N. While en route, the call was updated to a Person Shot.
When officers arrived on the scene, they observed the victim in his wheelchair unresponsive, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.
The preliminary investigation suggests that the victim along with others were gathered outside near the roadway under a tree. An unknown vehicle approached the group and began firing gunshots, fatally wounding the victim, and left the scene.
No one else was injured.
There is no one in custody.

This is Birmingham’s 43rd murder investigation of 2024 with 5 justifiable death investigations.
