Media Release 103- Homicide Investigation- Avenue W

Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Wednesday, May 15, 2024.

The victim has been identified as:

Jaquavius James Weston, (18), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 11:23 p.m., West Precinct officers responded to two separate ShotSpotter notifications. One notification registered approximately eighteen rounds of gunfire, and the other registered six more rounds in the 2400 Block of Avenue W, Ensley Highlands community.

When officers arrived on the scene, they encountered two residents who stated they had just arrived home and did not hear or see anything unusual. Officers canvased the location and did not observe anything unusual at that time.

At approximately 11:53 p.m., officers responded back to the location on a Person Shot call.

When officers arrived on the scene, they observed the victim at approximately fifteen feet down an embankment lying unresponsive, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.

The preliminary investigation suggests that the victim was outside of the residence and involved in a verbal altercation on the phone with an unknown individual. An unknown vehicle
approached the victim and gunshots were fired, fatally wounding the victim.

There is no one in custody.

This is Birmingham’s 44th murder investigation of 2024 with 5 justifiable death investigations.

The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations in the total homicide investigations counts.
