Unclassified Death Investigation
The Birmingham Police Department is conducting an unclassified death investigation. The incident occurred on Monday, May 22, 2023.
Just before 7 PM, North Precinct officers were dispatched to the 4000 Block of Old Lewisburg Road on report of a House Fire.
Officers arrived on the scene along with Birmingham Fire and Rescue (BFR) personnel; officers observed a house engulfed in flames. BFR personnel extinguished the flames.
BFR personnel discovered a victim lying unresponsive in the house. BFR personnel pronounced the victim deceased.
A BFR fire investigator has ruled this fire Undetermined. BPD is treating this fire as suspicious activity.
BPD Homicide detectives will investigate. Detectives are looking into whether the house was abandoned.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office took care and custody of the victim. The Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the victim’s cause of death.
