Arrest Made in the Juanderius Woods Homicide Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives have obtained a warrant for an arrest in connection to the murder of Juanderius Woods. Juanderius Woods was shot and killed in the 4400 Block of 9th Avenue North (Dr. Morrell Todd Homes Housing Community) on Monday, May 29, 2023.

The suspect has been identified as:

Demarco Griffin, (27), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

Birmingham Police Homicide Detectives presented information on the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. After an assessment of the information, detectives obtained a warrant for Murder.

On Friday, June 2, 2023, officers with the Community Safety Partnership Division (responsible for patrolling all housing communities) observed Demarco Griffin’s vehicle at an apartment complex in East Birmingham.

Community Safety Partnership officers notified the Homicide Unit who then requested assistance from the Special Enforcement Division’s Crime Reduction Team.

Crime Reduction Team officers responded to the apartment complex and took Demarco Griffin into custody without any incident.

Demarco Griffin will be booked into the Jefferson County Jail with No Bond.

This arrest would not have been possible if it wasn’t for the partnership between the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District (HABD) and the Birmingham Police Department.

Homicide Investigation

(Media Release 113)

 

The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Monday, May 29, 2023.

The victim has been identified as:

Juanderius Woods, (43), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 8:10 PM, South Precinct officers began receiving multiple Shot Spotter alerts in the 800 Block of 44th Place North. Officers were alerted a person was shot in the 4400 Block of 9th Avenue North.

Officers entered a parking lot when they observed the victim lying unresponsive on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.

The preliminary investigation suggests there was an exchange of gunfire in the parking lot. We believe the victim was targeted in this shooting.

There is no one custody.
