Double Homicide Investigation Update
The Jefferson County Coroner has identified the victims in a double homicide that occurred on Sunday, May 16, 2021 in the 1000 block of Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard South. (Brother Bryan Park)
The victims have been identified as:
Courtney Jan Ashley (35), W/F, of Birmingham, Alabama.
Brian Anthony Adkins (34), B/M, of Birmingham, Alabama.
This is Birmingham’s 40th and 41st murder of 2021 with 3 justifiable death investigations. The Birmingham Police Department adheres to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines set for all law enforcement agencies across the United States. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines do not require law enforcement agencies to include justifiable death investigations into the total homicide investigations counts.

Double Homicide Investigation
The Birmingham Police Department reports detectives are conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Sunday morning May 16, 2021 in the 1000 block of Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard South (Brother Bryan Park).
The victims will be identified upon notification of next of kin.
Just before 6:30 a.m., officers from South Precinct responded to the location on a call of two people shot. Upon arrival officers found two victims unresponsive. A female was observe lying in the street with an apparent gunshot wound. She was transported to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Shortly after arrival detectives were notified the victim succumb to her injuries and was pronounced deceased by hospital staff. A male victim was also located on the sidewalk unresponsive. He was pronounced deceased on the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue as well as the Jefferson County Coroner.
The preliminary investigation indicates the victims were approached by a male and a verbal altercation occurred prior to both victims being shot. According to witness accounts, during the altercation a dog was mentioned during the argument. The victims were walking a dog at the time of the incident. Investigators have established the suspect and the female victim were acquaintances in a dating relationship. The suspect fled the scene prior to officer’s arrival.
